Personal blogs are a popular way to express yourself, share ideas and connect with like-minded people who want to hear what you have to say. Whether you’re passionate about travel, food, technology, or any other topic, starting your own personal blog can be exciting. Many new bloggers dive in headfirst hoping to have a fully established blog packed with new posts that go viral in the first month . If you’ve been contemplating diving into the world of blogging but aren’t sure where to begin, I’m excited to share my step-by-step guide on how to make it happen. I’ve put together some simple steps, and a few complicated ones, to get you started on your own blog the best way possible right from the beginning. In this guide, I’ll walk you through the easiest way to kickstart your very own personal blog.
Step 1: Define Your Blog Niche and Target Audience
Before you start creating content, the first thing you need to do is identify your blog niche and target audience. What specific topic could you talk about non-stop? This topic could be your first source of blog content. What are you knowledgeable and passionate about? Understanding your niche is a good way to help you focus your blog theme and attract the perfect audience for your blog within the first year. Whether it’s fashion, fitness, parenting or photography– there’s a niche for you, I promise. The more thought you put into choosing this niche the better off you will be for the long term. The audience will see your authenticity and come back for more if you take the first step of defining both of these areas before creating your first blog post.
Step 2: Choose a Blogging Platform
Once you’ve identified your niche and who you are writing to, the next step is to choose a blogging platform. When I started blogging there were very few options but this has completely changed over the years. There are all kinds of options from a free blogging platform such as blogger, Wix or WordPress.com to a self-hosted WordPress blog, Medium.com, Squarespace and more. Each option comes with its own set of features and some are much more user-friendly than others. Spend some time looking around at them all, check out free demonstrations, look at blogs you love and see what they use, finding the platform that is easiest for you to use while giving you all of the options you want is probably the most important part of the process.
Step 3: Select a Domain Name and Hosting Provider
Your domain name is your blog’s online address, so it’s important to choose a name that is memorable, easy to spell, and reflects your blog’s content as well as tying into the name of your blog. You can generally find a free domain name, the part you have to pay for is the ability to put your site online. This is where hosting comes in.
Once you’ve selected your own domain name, you’ll choose a web hosting company to make your own website accessible on the internet. Many blogging platforms offer hosting services, or you can opt for third-party hosting providers for more flexibility and control. I have been using TigerTech for years since some of the bigger named hosts gave me so many issues. I haven’t had a single problem with them and their customer service is AMAZING. I use their basic plan and was thrilled when I wanted to add another website I didn’t need a new hosting plan, they added it on for free. Cannot recommend TigerTech enough!
Step 4: Design Your Blog
Your blog design plays a big role in attracting and retaining visitors, especially nowadays when people have a very short online attention span. Successful bloggers choose a clean and visually appealing theme that complements their content and reflects a personal style throughout the blog pages. Your blog platform with have a free theme (or ten!) for you to play around with or you could find a paid theme for more ptions. If you’re just starting out I would recommend starting with something free and playing around with it until you know what extras you want that a free theme can’t provide. Make sure you optimize your blog for mobile devices because if your website isn’t easily navigated on a phone you will lose visitors immediately.
Step 5: Create Compelling Content
Now that you’ve completed the hard work of setting up your blog, it’s time to start creating content. Brainstorm blog topics relevant to your niche and audience and then just start writing. Your blogging journey may begin with lots of posts in your draft folder but writing consistently is a great way to boost your writing skills, get a feel for your “voice” and narrow down that perfect first post. Don’t forget to incorporate photos, videos, infographics, anything to enhance your content. There is nothing less enticing that a long page full of plan text. I create every graphic in Canva. It is SO user friendly and a free service unless you want additional features as your blogging progresses.
Step 6: Promote Your Blog
Building an audience for your blog takes time, effort and thick skin. You’re putting yourself out there on the internet and it can take a long time to build up a dedicated audience but the time you put in is worth it if you stay consistent. If you don’t already have social media accounts, platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and Instagram are great places to share your blog posts and engage with your audience. Pinterest has hands-down been my greatest driver of traffic since it was created. Collaborate with other bloggers in your niche, participate in online communities and leverage search engine optimization (SEO) techniques like keyword research to increase your blog’s visibility in search results.
Step 7: Engage with Your Audience
Lastly, use your personality and expertise to engage with the audience you want. Building a community around your blog is the most important thing you can do to maintain consistent traffic that comes back for more. Respond to comments, answer questions and offer your personal experiences to foster a sense of connection with your readers. As you become established you can consider hosting giveaways, posting polls on social media and offering Q&A sessions to encourage interaction and keep your audience coming back for more. Engaging often can take a lot of time but it will always pay off!
Starting a personal blog can be a rewarding and fulfilling journey, allowing you to share your passions, experiences and expertise with the world. By following these steps and staying consistent and committed, you’ll be well on your way to building a successful and thriving blog.
